Isaiah opens with a sobering picture: Judah has received extraordinary care from God, yet has turned against him. Isaiah 1 is not merely a warning about bad behavior or national decline. It presents a formal covenant case against a people who knew God’s law, enjoyed his blessings, and still chose rebellion.

The opening verses establish themes that run through the entire book: God’s rule over history, human sin, the consequences of covenant unfaithfulness, judgment, repentance, and the hope God preserves for a faithful remnant.
