National Rebellion and the Judgment of God

Psalm 9:17 (NKJV)

“The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.”

When we observe the shifting demographics, the overwhelming border crises, and the cultural destabilization occurring across America and Western Europe today, it is very easy to look for purely political explanations. We want to blame specific politicians, economic policies, or globalist agendas. While those elements certainly play a role, the Christian must look deeper and examine the world through the lens of Scripture. Throughout the Bible, God deals with nations in history based on their obedience or rebellion to His covenant law. The current immigration issue in the West is not an accident of history. It is the active judgment of God upon nations that have fundamentally rebelled against His law.

In the book of Deuteronomy, God clearly outlines the blessings for obedience and the curses for disobedience. When a nation rejects the authority of God’s Word, God does not sit idly by. He often uses the movement of peoples, the loss of national sovereignty, and the influx of foreign nations as a rod of correction to awaken a rebellious people. If we want to understand why our borders are compromised and our culture is fracturing, we must look at our own hands. We have committed grievous violations against the law of God, and the Lord is giving us over to the natural consequences of our national sins.

The Refusal to Judge Evildoers

God established the civil magistrate for a very specific purpose. According to Romans 13, the governing authorities are appointed by God to be a terror to evil works and to execute wrath on those who practice evil. But in America and Western Europe, our justice systems have entirely inverted this divine mandate. We refuse to judge evildoers according to God’s standard of justice. We coddle criminals, release the violent back into our streets, and instead punish the law-abiding citizen who attempts to defend his family. When a nation abandons biblical justice and refuses to punish the wicked, God brings judgment upon that nation to expose its folly. Lawlessness in the courts breeds lawlessness at the borders.

The Unbiblical Welfare State

God did not ordain the civil government to act as a savior or a provider of charity. Throughout Scripture, the responsibility of providing for the poor, the widow, and the fatherless is given to the family and to the church. When the state usurps this role, it must fund its supposed generosity through the theft of heavy taxation, redistributing wealth in direct violation of the Eighth Commandment. This unbiblical welfare system acts as an unnatural magnet. It incentivizes mass migration not for honest labor, but for government subsidies. By abandoning God’s economic laws and erecting a socialist welfare state, we have created the very mechanism that is currently bankrupting our nations and dissolving our borders.

The Tolerance of False Religions

We have entirely forgotten the First Commandment: “You shall have no other gods before Me” (Exodus 20:3). America and Western Europe were built upon the foundation of the Christian worldview, but in our modern arrogance, we have embraced the idol of pluralism. We have operated under the delusion that a nation can remain neutral, treating all religions and all gods as equally valid. By allowing and even celebrating the open practice of false religions within our borders, we have committed spiritual adultery. God warns throughout the Old Testament that when a people invite the worship of false gods into their land, He will give them over to the confusion and destruction those false religions inherently bring.

The Shedding of Innocent Blood

Perhaps our most horrifying national crime is the slaughter of the unborn. We have aborted millions of innocent children, sacrificing them on the altar of convenience and sexual freedom. In the days of the Old Testament, God warned the Israelites that if they offered their children to the false god Molech, He would cut them off and pour out His wrath upon the land (Leviticus 20). The blood of millions of American and European children cries out from the ground, just as Abel’s blood cried out to the Lord. A nation cannot systematically slaughter its own offspring and expect the blessing and protection of the Almighty. When we destroy our own posterity, God will hand our inheritance over to others.

Refusing to Build Upon the Law of God

Ultimately, all of these violations stem from one root issue: we have refused to build our homes, our churches, and our nations upon the law of God. Jesus warned in Matthew 7 that any house built upon the sand of human wisdom will collapse when the storms come. We have traded the solid rock of Scripture for the shifting sands of secular humanism. Even within the church, we have embraced antinomianism—the rejection of God’s law—preaching a cheap grace that demands no covenant obedience. If the church will not submit to the law of God, we cannot expect the civil magistrate to do so. The crisis we face is a desperate call to repentance. We must return to the Book, weeping for our national sins, and pleading for God to grant us the grace to rebuild upon His unchanging truth.

Practical Applications for Obedience

We cannot change the direction of our nation until we first change the direction of our own homes. Husbands and fathers must take responsibility for establishing the law of God in their households. You must teach your children the commandments of God, ensuring they understand biblical justice, the sanctity of life, and the exclusivity of Jesus Christ. Reject the dependency of the welfare state by working diligently and practicing true, biblical charity within your local church, providing for the needy directly rather than relying on the government.

Theological Reflection Questions

  1. How does recognizing the current cultural and immigration crisis as God’s judgment change the way you pray for your nation and your local leaders?
  2. In what ways has the modern church contributed to this national judgment by ignoring or downplaying the importance of God’s law in civil and public life?
  3. Read Romans 13:1–4. How does the biblical role of civil government contrast with the modern welfare state, and why is this distinction vital for a healthy, God-honoring society?
